Partners? We again will pay for our one “partner” Israel, as we always have. Trump started this illegal war without contacting Congress as he is Constitutionally required to do to deflect news coverage from of his refusal to release the Epstein Files. Which invites an obvious question: if this agreement represents the triumph that Mr Trump claims it does, then who, precisely, has surrendered?
It is evidently not Iran.
The regime remains in power. There has been no regime change. There has been no unconditional surrender. There has been no march of the vanquished through the gates bearing terms of capitulation. Instead, there are negotiations, sanctions relief, unfrozen assets, oil waivers, reconstruction discussions and another sixty days of talks concerning the very nuclear issues that were supposedly resolved by force.
One recalls that this same president demanded “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER” in language so emphatic that it appeared to have been composed by a man leaning heavily upon the caps-lock key. The Iranian leadership was to submit. The regime was to disappear. A new chapter was to begin.
Yet here we are at Versailles, not witnessing the surrender of Tehran but the abandonment of those ambitions.
The irony is exquisite. A location associated in the public mind with imposed settlements has become the stage for the public burial of maximalist rhetoric. The man who demanded capitulation has arrived to sign a compromise.
This is not necessarily a criticism of the agreement itself. Statesmen compromise. Diplomacy is the art of obtaining what is possible rather than insisting upon what is impossible. The problem lies elsewhere. One cannot spend months promising total victory and then present a negotiated settlement as though the two are interchangeable.
The real humiliation is not that compromise occurred. Compromise is often the mark of seriousness. The humiliation lies in the distance between the promise and the outcome.
Versailles, of all places, merely provides the scenery.
History occasionally displays a sense of humour. On this occasion it has chosen a particularly French one.
On the contrary, I think it's a world-class troll by Macron, who knows that Trump salivates over the golden excesses of the Ancien Régime, without having a clue about Versailles's significance in ending the rules of both the House of Bourbon, and the Hohenzollern Kaisers.
Whether Trump understands the historical significance of Versailles is almost beside the point. My argument wasn’t that he is ignorant of it. It was that Versailles carries a particular symbolic weight in the public imagination and that the symbolism is rather awkward for an agreement being presented as a triumph over Iran. So basically, Trump cuts his losses—which have been huge—and once again pays off terrorists so he can move on from this fiasco to the more pressing issue of winning the midterms so he can escape another impeachment and set the table for remaining in power after 2028. I have to ask: Is this the art of the deal? Is this Trump keeping his promises to stay out of needless wars and making life affordable for Americans? Or is this another grievous example of poor decision making by a mentally impaired mob boss in rapid decline? Most importantly, where does this deal leave America in the eyes of our allies and adversaries alike? And by the way, what happened to the Congressional demand that the Epstein files be released in their entirety?
