Lori- Good question. My take is California’s stronger clean-car standards are protected by a long-standing Clean Air Act waiver that presidents can’t eliminate on their own, and courts have repeatedly upheld. The administration can try to roll it back, but it would face major lawsuits from California and others, and history is on California’s side. I also believe that as long as that waiver stands, automakers will keep building to California’s higher standards.
No kidding. Presidents Obama and Biden both tried but met with a great deal of resistance from the Republicans in Congress. Each successful step forward was erased by Trump in his first and second administrations. Trump and his enablers care about one thing and one thing only. Money.
