You Felt It This Morning. You Know Why. Don't Go Back To Sleep Until November.

Your Gut Is Telling You The Truth
You woke up to it again this morning. Another headline. Another act of violence and shooting that should have been impossible and somehow wasn’t. Another moment where you stared at your phone and felt something inside you go quiet. And underneath the anger, underneath the exhaustion, there’s that quiet question you’ve been carrying around for months now, maybe years, the one you haven’t said out loud because saying it out loud makes it real.
Why does everything feel broken?
I’ve spent four decades inside courtrooms watching human behavior under pressure. I’ve cross-examined liars. I’ve represented people who lost everything because someone with power decided their pain didn’t matter. I’ve sat across from wealthy millionaires making tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and from people who couldn’t afford lunch. And I’m telling you, after all of that, there is a reason this country feels the way it feels right now. There is a reason the air is thick with hate. There is a reason your neighbors stopped talking to each other. There is a reason your kids are anxious and your parents are angry and you’re exhausted by Tuesday afternoon.
The reason is simple. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Stick with me, because by the end of this you’re going to know exactly what to do about it.
The Top Sets The Temperature
Every organization, every family, every team, every country takes its emotional temperature from the top. Always has. Always will.
When the person in charge models cruelty, cruelty becomes acceptable. When the person in charge lies and faces no consequences, lying becomes a strategy. When the person in charge punches down at the weakest among us, ordinary people start to believe maybe punching down is okay. Maybe it’s even strength.
It isn’t strength. It’s the oldest con in human history dressed up in a new suit.
What we are watching unfold in this country is not an accident. It is not a glitch. It is the predictable result of leadership that has decided empathy is weakness, that decency is for suckers, that the rules apply to other people. When leaders signal that contempt is acceptable, contempt floods the system. When leaders signal that self-dealing is smart, self-dealing becomes the brand. When leaders signal that the Constitution is a suggestion, ordinary citizens start to wonder if maybe their own promises are suggestions too.
You are not imagining the rot. You are watching it spread in real time from the top down.
Why Your Gut Has Been Right All Along
I want you to trust something. Your instincts. The thing inside you that flinches when a powerful person mocks a disabled reporter. The thing inside you that goes cold when leaders threaten to wipe entire civilizations off the map as if human lives are just chips on a poker table. The thing inside you that knows, in your bones, that a country built on dignity does not behave this way.
That feeling is not weakness. That feeling is your moral compass still working.
We are being told, every single day, that compassion is naive. That empathy is for losers. That caring about other Americans, let alone other human beings around the world, is somehow a character flaw. We are being trained to see our neighbors as enemies and our enemies as targets. We are being conditioned to cheer when someone hurts the people we’ve been told to hate.
This is the playbook of every authoritarian regime in human history. It is not new. It is not American. And it is working on a lot of people because fear is the most reliable drug ever invented.
You have not lost your mind. You have been watching a slow-motion assault on the basic idea that people matter.
The Push And Pull Of Real Change
Here is the part nobody in power wants you to internalize. Change runs in two directions at once.
Change from the top floods downward. We’ve talked about that. Bad leadership poisons the well, and people drink the poison and pass the cup.
Change from the ground also flows upward. Always has. The civil rights movement did not start in the Oval Office. Women’s suffrage did not start in the Senate. Workers’ rights did not start in a boardroom. Every meaningful expansion of human dignity in this country started with ordinary people who refused to accept that cruelty was the price of citizenship.
That is the part of the American story they don’t want you to remember right now, because if you remember it, you become dangerous. You become someone who understands that no president, no party, no billionaire, no cable news host gets to decide who you are or what you stand for.
You decide. Every single day. In a thousand small choices nobody else sees.
Empathy As Your Compass
I want to be very clear about something, because the people running this country love to twist words. Empathy is not weakness. Empathy is not surrender. Empathy is not turning the other cheek while bullies kick you in the teeth.
Empathy is strength under control. It is the discipline of seeing other human beings as fully human even when it would be easier to dismiss them. It is the courage to say I disagree with you and I still recognize your dignity. It is the foundation that lets you be tough without being cruel, firm without being vicious, strong without being a tyrant.
A country guided by empathy can still defend its borders. A country guided by empathy can still hold criminals accountable. A country guided by empathy can still project strength around the world. The difference is that a country guided by empathy does these things without losing its soul in the process.
What we have right now is the opposite. We have leadership that confuses cruelty with strength and corruption with cleverness. We have leadership that mistakes the cheap thrill of dominance for the hard work of governance. We have leadership that has forgotten, or maybe never knew, that the whole point of America was supposed to be that ordinary people mattered.
Your job, my job, our job, is to remember.
What Changes After November
I’m going to give you a piece of hope, because you’ve earned it.
The midterms this year are going to matter more than any midterm in your lifetime. I believe that with everything I have. A new majority in Congress unlocks the things that have been locked away for too long. The power of subpoena oversight. The power of the purse. The enforcement of the separation of powers that the founders spent sleepless nights designing precisely because they knew human beings in power tend to abuse it.
When checks and balances come back online, the temperature drops. When accountability returns, the worst actors lose their cover. When Congress remembers it is a coequal branch of government instead of a rubber stamp, the whole system starts to breathe again.
This is not partisan cheerleading. This is constitutional architecture. The founders built three branches of government for a reason, and that reason is staring you in the face every day on your news feed. The system only works when each branch does its job. Right now, one branch is missing in action. That changes in November. If you show up.
Your Move
You are not powerless. You have never been powerless. The whole strategy of authoritarianism depends on you believing you are powerless, because the moment you remember you aren’t, the spell breaks.
You have a vote. You have a voice. You have neighbors who feel exactly the way you feel and are waiting for someone to say it out loud first. You have kids and grandkids who are watching how you handle this moment and learning, in real time, what it means to be an American with a backbone.
Lead with empathy. Vote with empathy. Talk to your neighbors with empathy. Hold your leaders accountable with empathy guiding your demands. And refuse, absolutely refuse, to let anyone in power convince you that caring about other people is a weakness.
Caring about other people is the entire reason this country exists.
The repair is going to take years. Maybe decades. The damage is real and the road is long. None of that is a reason to sit down. All of it is a reason to stand up.
I’ll see you at the polls. I’ll see you in the comment section. I’ll see you in the conversation you’re going to have at dinner tonight with someone who needs to hear this.
The country you want is still possible. It starts this Sunday morning, with you.
Mitch Jackson, Esq.

Preach it, brother! As is appropriate for a Sunday morning. We (in VA) are waiting with baited breath to hear if our redistricting plan goes into effect. It won't be a shoo-in to elect Dems to the new seats. I hope everyone finds a candidate (or 3) to support. We have got to take our country back from the endlessly greedy bastards.
Thanks Mitch for writing a lovely essay reminding us that kindness, empathy, and a moral compass are not character flaws or weaknesses, they are our strength.
BTW, my gut has a hinky feeling about the attempted assassination at the annual journalist Ballroom gala. Why didn't anyone on stage look surprised or scared, even after security was moving them, I think I saw people grabbing their drinks!! Who does that when you hear gunfire. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but, it seems typical Trump deflection, low poll rating, hey everyone, feel sorry for me bc I haven't lowered groceries, utilities, gas, healthcare, and don't know how to stop the war I started in Iran.......just thinking out loud, don't want to sound like a nut case. But we all know who the real nut case is.......lol.
