You are standing in your kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. The oven ticks. Chairs scrape as the neighbors from two doors down settle in around the table, and somebody’s phone buzzes face down next to the salt. Coffee goes around. The television in the next room runs the same clip for the fourth time today, and there he is again, the President of the United States, pointing a finger at half the country and calling them communists.
The woman who waves to you every morning sets down her cup and nods along. The guy who helped you move your couch last spring says yeah, that’s about right. They all look over at you. Deep in your gut you know the word is wrong. You feel an answer forming somewhere behind your ribs. Nothing comes out. The moment passes, and the lie sits down at your table like a guest nobody invited to stay.
I want to hand you the words.
Let me admit something first. Most of us never got a real education on this. We got one week on the Cold War in eleventh grade, a documentary with grainy footage, a test on Friday, and then we moved on to the Industrial Revolution. So when a man on television throws around a word with a body count attached to it, most Americans have no ruler to measure the claim against. He is counting on exactly this.
Here is your ruler.
What Communism Is
Communism, as every country calling itself communist has actually run it, puts the government in charge of everything productive and leaves you owning none of it. No private farm. No private factory. No family business handed down to a daughter. The state holds the land, the machines, the stores, and the newspapers, and the state decides what gets made, who makes it, and what everybody earns. One party rules. Elections are theater or they do not exist at all. Picture a town where every shop, every acre of farmland, and every printing press belongs to the men in the capital, and the baker has no say over his own prices, his own sign, or who walks through his door.
Think of the Soviet Union under Stalin, who seized the farms outright and starved millions in the taking. Think of Cuba in 1968, when the government shut down and absorbed tens of thousands of the last small private businesses on the island in a single campaign. Speaking against the party is a crime, and people who speak anyway disappear.
What Socialism Is
Socialism means the public owns the things that produce wealth. The factories. The mines. The banks. The railroads. A socialist argues that ownership of major productive assets belongs in public, worker, or cooperative hands instead of private shareholder hands. Norway shows you what a real version looks like inside a democracy. The Norwegian government owns 67 percent of Equinor, its largest energy company, and its direct holdings have amounted to more than a fifth of the total value of the Oslo Stock Exchange. A socialist wants the deed. He wants ownership of the big assets moved out of private hands and into public ones, and he says so plainly, because the whole argument turns on the deed.
What America Runs On
Now hold that definition next to what runs this country, and the accusation collapses. We run a mixed economy. Private companies compete, private owners keep their titles, markets set prices, and taxes fund a short list of services everybody uses together. Your fire department. The interstate you drove on this morning. Your kid’s public school, your library, your local police force, Social Security, Medicare, and the weather service warning you a tornado is twenty minutes out. None of that is socialism.
Adam Smith argued for public roads and bridges in 1776 and nobody has called the father of free market economics a Marxist yet. Denmark runs the same way, and its own prime minister stood at Harvard in 2015 and told Americans directly that his country is a market economy and far from a socialist planned economy. He said it specifically to correct Bernie Sanders. Every wealthy nation on earth runs a mixed economy, including ours, going back to the day your grandfather’s road got paved.
