Is this what you want for America. A president standing on live television telling you the streets of Washington D.C. are overflowing with violent criminals when the facts from the Department of Justice prove violent crime is at a thirty-year low.

On August 11, 2025, Donald Trump stood with his cabinet members flanking him, declaring a public safety emergency, taking control of the Metropolitan Police Department away from the people of D.C., deploying the National Guard, and placing that power into the hands of Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Homicides fell thirty-two percent. Robberies dropped thirty-nine percent. Armed carjackings plunged fifty-three percent. Assaults with a dangerous weapon went down twenty-seven percent, hitting the lowest level in over thirty years. D.C. does not even rank among the top 25 most dangerous U.S. cities when assessed by overall crime rates.

The work of local prosecutors and law enforcement has targeted the real drivers of violence. They dismantled gangs and crews running drug markets, leading to sustained drops in crime in the neighborhoods they once controlled. In one neighborhood, violent crime fell sixty-six percent in the six months after a major crew was taken down, and that reduction stuck for years. These are not numbers that signal an emergency. These are numbers that show a city making real progress.

The Real Reason for This Power Grab

Trump is not responding to a crime wave. He is responding to political collapse. His tariffs and economic policies are failing. He has not ended the war in Ukraine. He refuses to release the Epstein files. His approval rating has fallen to the lowest level of his second term. Americans are angry.

What Real Accountability Looks Like

If crime were truly rising, Washington D.C. residents already have tools to hold leaders accountable. They can call for emergency sessions of the city council. They can replace the mayor or the police chief through regular or special elections. They can demand policy changes through public forums and advocacy. None of those processes require the President to step in and take over. Fabricating an emergency to override local control is not leadership. It is a direct assault on democratic governance.

Between now and the 2026 midterms, there must be relentless public pressure on every member of Congress to act. When the elections arrive, every Republican who stood by must be removed from office.

If we regain control of Congress, we regain control of the federal budget. Without funding, Trump’s authoritarian ambitions stall. If Republicans lock in gerrymandered districts designed to keep them in power, and win the midterms, the damage may last for decades.

P.S. I am furious watching reporters fumble their duty. Their job is to interrogate power, ask hard follow ups, demand documents, verify claims in real time, and stay on a question until the truth shows up.
