Here in Australia voting in our elections is compulsory. On voting day, which is only ever a Saturday, virtually every public school, scout hall and community hall in the nation is set up as a polling location. They are absolutely everywhere. Almost every location has a community group who sets up a BBQ on site where voters stop to buy what has become affectionately known as a “democracy sausage” on a bread roll with mustard and tomato sauce (aka ketchup!). Coffee carts are usually always there, too. There is a festive atmosphere and sometimes cake stalls fundraise for local groups. Musical kids may busk for the public’s enjoyment. People mingle after voting and chat to each other. There is zero animosity towards those whose political preferences differ from one’s own. In fact, there is rarely any political discussion at all. And, to repeat, voting is compulsory. In my 57 years I have never once heard a single person complain about this, either. It is what we do. We enjoy being able to vote in free and fair elections.

To my American friends - please embrace the Aussie spirit come November and vote in your midterms to overturn the abhorrent behaviour the world is being forced to both witness and endure from the despicable Trump and his sycophantic enablers. Please!

The key to getting things turned around in the nation is for we the people to vote, either by mail-in ballot or actually going to the polls. trump thinks that he can send troops or his ICE terrorists to the polls, but we need to go and vote, regardless.
