Mike, your last question is the real one: how do you get the guards to guard themselves? I am a human rights attorney, and the honest answer is that you mostly cannot, which is why the design never relied on it. The guards were supposed to be guarded by other guards, inspectors watching agencies, courts watching the executive, the press watching all of it, each one backstopping the next. What happened these past months was not that the guards stopped guarding themselves. It was that the people whose whole job was to watch them were removed, ring by ring. So the rebuild is not about better individuals. It is about putting the watchers back and giving them protection that a single angry man cannot strip on a whim. That part is fixable. It just has to be built on purpose, the same way it was taken apart on purpose.

Today, I read an article by retired Judge Wayne A. Morris titled We Went to Sleep.
His message was simple:
• Democracy does not protect itself.
• Citizens must stay engaged.
• Citizens must stay informed.
• Citizens must stay awake.
I agreed strongly enough that I wrote a longer response, which I will be publishing separately.
What impressed me most, however, was what happened afterward.
Judge Morris and I exchanged a few thoughts about verification, accountability, and public confidence in elections. Although we come from different backgrounds, we quickly found common ground.
Verification matters.
Records matter.
Transparency matters.
Confidence in public institutions depends upon the ability to confirm that systems are working as intended.
That principle applies in business.
It applies in finance.
It applies in government.
And it applies in elections.
For more than twenty-two years, I have worked on election transparency and public verification. One lesson I have learned is that meaningful reform rarely comes from people shouting at each other.
It comes from people willing to listen to each other.
That is why I remain hopeful.
Across the country, citizens, election officials, attorneys, academics, journalists, and public servants are beginning to ask the same question:

The hardest truth in this essay is that democracies are rarely destroyed by a single man. They are weakened when enough ordinary people begin to believe that protecting them is someone else's responsibility.
Freedom is not usually lost because bad leaders appear. It is lost when good people stop feeling personally responsible for defending it.
I struggle every day with how to tell my children. I played with both of my grandchildren today, listened to one of my kids talk about her future and I was at a loss. Didn’t know how to burst her bubble.

We all need to point out and explain the ideal of how the country is supposed to work, acknowledge that it's not perfect, but that improvement is possible, that it requires honesty and transparency, and clearly show how the people trying to tear it all down are doing just that. They are wrecking much of the best of the country and blaming immigrants and "woke" and what's left of the tax system and courts for real problems that, instead, can be and need to be addressed through collective action with the system we have, with some important upgrades.
This, in my humble opinion, goes back to the lack of accountability that started over 150 years ago. After the Civil War, there was no accountability for the people who started and continued slavery. A human rights abuse. There should have been accountability for the people who treated humans that way. Maybe we wouldn't be so tribal today.
If we would have improved on those human rights throughout those years, maybe we would have rooted out the bigotry by now. That does not mean hatred would've been eradicated.
Putting laws in place throughout the last 150 years to improve our people's lives, and holding people accountable when those laws are broken, no matter their name, status, or title would not have landed us here. People should not be able to buy their way out of accountability. We've let that go on way too long. Who people know should not let them escape accountability. Again, has been going on too long.
We have become complacent in taking care of each other. We're all in this together. This article is spot on.
I agree with everything you said, so eloquently, Mitch. To expand on it - or put an even blunter point on it - we slept because we believed the hard fights had been fought and won and that the future was likely just upside. (For this argument, I'm setting aside, climate change, because that's a whole other ballgame, and a global one at that.)
We believed that racism, and sexist, and homophobia, and all the other anti-isms had, if not eradicated, been beaten back itno the dark corners.
Women like me (and fathers of daughters, like you) never thought that our bodily autonomy could be taken away from us, and that the opportunities our mothers and grandmothers fought so hard for us to have, could ever come under threat.
We believed even that a more humane version of capitalism was finally going to come about; after all, Business Roundtable redefined the Purpose of a Corporation, rejecting shareholder primacy in favor of serving all stakeholders, including employees and communities.
We believed that finally the arc of the moral universe would always continue to bend toward progress.
At the same time, some of us believed and "slept," but with one eye still open. I cringed when Hillary Rodham Clinton won the Democratic presidential nomination - not because I didn't think she'd back a good president; she absolutely would have - but I strongly suspected this country would not do what so many others had already done and elect a woman president. I doubly cringed when the eminently qualified then-VP Kamala Harris got the nod because I feared the country was still not ready for a woman president; particularly a woman who is also a person of color.
Where I was really asleep is in not seeing just how quickly our business leaders would fold, and how many would actually embrace the strongman, and how ill-suited those who believed in fair play would be in fighting the fight that's at hand.
Our country is wrapped within a Gordion Knot and only by embracing the boldness of those who came before us will we be able to cut through it and free ourselves to resume our march of progress... once we clean up the mess that has been made.
I do think we almost had a President Hillary Clinton. She was coming off of Obama's popularity and positive overall feeling for Democrats in general. Polling evidence suggested that right after FBI director James Comey told Congress they were analyzing additional emails obtained during its investigation of the unrelated matter of former New York Representative Anthony Weiner's laptop (shared with his then wife and Clinton assistant Huma Abedin), her support dropped off considerably. That with a few missteps barely cost her four of the five "blue wall" states. This despite Putin's Trump support. Once Trump got in and poisoned the political atmosphere, we lost the cultural progress.
This is so well written. You know that when it can make the reader uncomfortable even when they don’t even know a person to have an uncomfortable conversation with. Of course that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t find someone somewhere. The point is that we need to do more. Thank you for reminding us that none of us did enough. As a 70 year old white woman who raised a biological Black child in the Deep South during the Civil Rights Movement, l recall the still UNreconciled inhumanity & H8red of Bloody Sunday. Watching the news of those full-force fire hoses knocking children to the ground; watching whyte police beat Black men & women with nightsticks just for trying to shield their children from harm; watching police dogs savagely bite into protesters, all of which left searing images in my 7 year-old impressionable mind of the "things" my parents inculcated in me were 'wrong', yet took no observable actions to stop! l swore then that l would dedicate my life to the change l wanted to see in our H8-filled IMperfect union. I attended classes, learned and researched ameriKKKan Black history. During Covid l curated & posted a Black History YEAR post EVERY day because a month isn't long enough to celebrate ALL that Black citizens have sacrificed & contributed to our society for the greater good of ALL! I post often to make others UNcomfortable because there's zero growth in comfort / complacency. I call Senators and representatives and let them know we are watching their complicitness, their actions & their inactions and l note those [in a notebook] who respond to my questions, comments, concerns ... and also note those who do not! I use my voice to call out the lack of representation for the taxation l pay (as l watch in disbelief & horror how the Broligarchs receive tax cuts while l count more homeless people dwelling in our city's streets-begging for food and $). And when my 2025 tax return was UNilaterally and wrongfully hijacked by the DOGE-slashed-lRS BECAUSE the IRS FAILED to accurately credit my estimated bank-cleared advance payments (and my FULL refund was not returned to me), l penned a scathing letter sharing my indignation to the "elder abuse" the IRS causes by not accurately capturing ALL of my estimated tax payments as the a$$hole-in-chief was simultaneously setting-up a $10Bn lawsuit against the IRS [he has now "allegedly" dropped] so he can grift even more from hard-working ameriKKKans' money to benefit his family and corrupt cronies!
I also have very strained relationships with my 3 older siblings (who voted for the TACO despite my best efforts to dissuade them based on the content in Project 2025) with whom l previously interacted weekly - now, we barely interact at all. I cannot condone or forgive their betrayal to my offspring or to me, having seen the racism we endured decadess ago...and watching it return even more emboldened TODAY! I am modestly uplifted that the "dark-side is FINALLY turning towards the light." Now, all they have to do is open their eyes, remove the dried and crusty secretions from the inner and outer edges of their eyes and actually SEE what the rest of us have been seeing for nigh on a decade (the "concept of a plan" that an idiot dreamt he could force down WeThePeople's throats) and make it FULL STOP at the 2026 Midterms! This has always been our country. The Civil war was fought because of these divisions. Trump didn't create this Twighlight Zone we are living through, he just happened to be the straw that broke the camels back . He was the tipping point which now allowed them to say out loud what they have always been thinking. This country is swirling around the toilet bowl. Trump just happened to be the one who flushed it. If Trump and his bought and paid for corrupt Supreme Court manages to steal the midterms, this 250 year experiment is over! The Democrats need to grow a set and learn how to lie and cheat like the Republicans if they have any hope of survival.

Trump didn't create this Twighlight Zone we are living through, he just happened to be the straw that broke the camels back . He was the tipping point which now allowed them to say out loud what they have always been thinking. This country is swirling around the toilet bowl. Trump just happened to be the one who flushed it. If Trump and his bought and paid for corrupt Supreme Court manages to steal the midterms, this 250 year experiment is over! The Democrats need to grow a set and learn how to lie and cheat like the Republicans if they have any hope of survival.
I am fully aware of both the upsides and downsides to America. You're kind of missing the point of the post. And by the way the Democrats are doing all they can to try to fix this problem. Elections have consequences. The only reason, and I mean the only reason, we're experiencing these problems right now is because Republicans in Congress don't have the balls to do what they were elected to do, and that is represent their constituents and govern.
Congress also os wilfully NOT upholding /defending the Constitution. My created word to describe their inactions is that theyve ALL undergone an elective surgerical procedure called a: spinaltesticalectomy, the voluntary simultaneous surgical removal of spine & testicals, in one fell swipe [of the scalpel]!
