I have nieces as moms who tell me they are too busy to register. I have been beating my drum my whole life and fear I have fallen on deaf ears. We have privileged them too far removed from sacrifice. I donate to candidates supporting democratic values across the country. I write postcards and help with phone banks. None of it seems enough. Mitch! I am with you! I have an outline-details of the plan are being developed with my buddies. In central VA we are beset on every side--it feels like. In a 10 point red district (Confederate flags), a new Dem governor who has national ambitions to run as a "moderate" when we worked hard to elect her to make things *better* not just the same. In 4 months she has vetoed 29! Democratic bills trying to bring VA into the 2010s. We have a confederate Supreme Court. Between those two betrayals, some voters will say "I told you so, it's not worth voting-they just throw it in the trash!"
I was expecting the MAGAs to be MAGA. I'll spend a long hot summer (to November and beyond) talking with people. I have an EV-- I don't care about gas prices, I'm willing to go anywhere! And alongside of the MAGA problem, now we have to address the problem in Richmond. (Michael Fanone did a great post today.)
Perhaps the big challenge for me is temperamental. I don't go looking for a fight. But if a fight comes looking for me, I am going to stand and fight. People puzzle me when they ignore, or leave it for someone else to do, or who frighten themselves with fantasies of what might happen. We don't know the future, but what we do now will shape the future.
Not long after Trump began attacking everything I realized that we were and are in a war. That understanding has helped me, as I try to explain to people: in a war terrible things happen, you can expect it. The only way we can prevent totally and eternally terrible things from happening is to fight hard & smart for our values, now. We are all going to die someday, of something, and if it comes to that I'd rather die with my boots on, knowing that I did my best to protect others, than live with a boot on my neck.

By the way, I get being in the middle of a good fight (I'm probably the only lawyer you'll meet who was in two fist fights during my law school days-- long but fun stories) but in this case we need to take our fight to the ballot box November. That needs to be our primary focus. Between now and then we need to stand tall, be loud and educate everyone as to what's really going on.

I had clients reaching out asking what they can do and so what I ended up doing was focusing on the daily breaking news stories, adding my legal expertise to explain what's really going on, and then most importantly trying to offer easy-to-follow solutions so that everyone can get involved with fixing these problems.
