Trump’s Offshore Drilling Is a Full-Blown Assault on Our Coastlines, Communities, and Kids' Futures

Introduction

I believe the February 2025 lawsuit filed by Earthjustice and a coalition of environmental groups may be one of the most important environmental legal fights of our time. Not just because it challenges another reckless executive order from Donald Trump, but because it draws a line in the sand, literally and legally, against the destruction of our oceans, our coasts, and everything that depends on them.

Trump’s executive order revokes protections on over 625 million acres of U.S. coastal waters. Let that number sink in. These aren’t just patches of blue on a map. These are living, breathing ecosystems. They are the nurseries for fish that feed our families. They are migration routes for whales, dolphins, and endangered sea turtles. They are coral reefs that have taken centuries to form and would take seconds to destroy with the wrong kind of drill.

And for what? A short-term profit boost for oil companies. Another performative stunt to prove loyalty to an industry that’s been bankrolling political power for decades. Once again, Trump is governing like a man with no sense of history, no regard for science, and no care for the long-term health of this planet or the people on it.

This isn’t new behavior. During his first term, Trump tried to do the exact same thing. A federal court blocked him, saying clearly that the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act gives presidents the right to protect offshore areas, but not the unilateral power to strip those protections away. That precedent still stands. And yet here we are again — with Trump doubling down and daring the courts to stop him.

The law is clear. The damage he’s inviting is even clearer.

I’ve read through the filings, listened to the environmental groups, and spoken with people on the ground. This isn't political theater. This is personal. From Alaska’s melting ice shelves to Florida’s disappearing coastlines, this move would open some of the most sensitive and protected waters to offshore drilling. And offshore drilling isn’t just a risk. It’s a guaranteed mess.

We’ve already seen the consequences. Oil spills don’t just stain the water. They choke it. They smother marine plants. They poison fish. They strand whales and birds in slicks of death. These spills ripple through the economy too, hitting fishing families, tourism businesses, and entire towns that rely on clean water to survive.

And let’s be real. The cleanup crews? They’re never enough. The settlements? Too late. The damage? Usually permanent. The oil industry always promises safety, always says they’ve learned from the last disaster, until the next one.

This is why groups like the Sierra Club, Oceana, Greenpeace, and so many others have lined up to fight this. Because they know what's at stake. Because they’ve spent decades defending these waters and they understand that Trump’s order isn’t just legally wrong, it’s morally indefensible.

This isn’t about red states or blue states. This is about blue water. This is about generational harm. Once we allow drilling rigs to stake their claim in these pristine places, we lose something we can never get back. And it’s not just coral or kelp or crustaceans. It’s trust. It’s stability. It’s the kind of future we owe to our kids and grandkids.

This administration doesn’t have the first clue how to act in good faith. Trump isn’t doing this to help Americans. He’s doing it to help the big oil corporations that help him. He talks about “energy dominance” like it’s some kind of rally cry, but what he’s really doing is making a grab for control, control over lands and waters that belong to all of us.

And if we don’t stop this now, what’s next? National parks? Endangered species laws? Clean air rules? Make no mistake, this lawsuit isn’t just about oceans. It’s about whether any president, especially one this reckless, can sweep aside environmental protections with the stroke of a pen and leave the rest of us to clean up the mess.

Next Steps

We already know Trump doesn’t respect the courts unless they serve him. We already know he doesn’t respect science unless it flatters him. And we already know he doesn’t respect the Constitution unless he’s twisting it into a prop. So it’s up to the rest of us to step up and say no. Loudly. Relentlessly. Publicly.

A stand against corruption. A stand for the people who fish, swim, and raise their kids along our coasts. A stand for every American who understands that once the ocean dies, everything else follows.

So what can you do? Speak up. Stay informed. Vote like the ocean depends on it, because it does. Support Earthjustice and all the groups on the front lines. And never, ever let any politician tell you that wrecking the planet is good policy.

We’ve been here before. But this time, the scale is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the danger is sharper. Trump’s executive order is a threat to every coastline in this country and every life that relies on it.

And in my opinion, if we don’t push back hard right now, we may not get another chance.
