Trump’s DC Power Grab Is About Control and Distraction, Not Crime

This morning, Donald Trump stood at a podium in Washington, D.C., flanked by his loyal inner circle, and lied to America. He announced what he called “Liberation Day.” He declared a public safety emergency, stripped the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department from local authority, handed control to Attorney General Pam Bondi, and ordered the National Guard into the streets. He promised to wipe out “violent gangs” and “roving mobs” and clear homeless encampments from public spaces.

He told America a crisis is raging in the capital. The truth is crime in D.C. is already at a thirty-year low. Violent crime has dropped twenty-six percent this year. Property crime is down five percent. D.C. does not even rank among the top twenty-five cities in America for crime rates. These are not my numbers. They are the official statistics from the city’s own police department.

This was not about public safety. This was about raw political power. By federalizing a local police force without the consent of the city’s elected leaders, Trump has bulldozed over the very laws and constitutional principles that separate a democracy from an authoritarian regime. The Home Rule Act gives the people of D.C. the right to govern their own police department. Congress can override it, but the president cannot unilaterally seize control because it suits his political playbook.

This is the kind of move you expect from a leader who views law enforcement as an extension of his personal authority, not as a public institution accountable to the people. It creates a dangerous precedent where any president can declare an “emergency” and place local police under federal command, no matter what the facts on the ground show. It erodes the guardrails that are supposed to keep power in check.

Trump’s speech this morning was rambling, disjointed, and calculated to push a false narrative. He painted D.C. as a city under siege when the data shows the opposite. He staged a performance designed to stir fear and justify sending federal forces into an American city. His administration amplified isolated incidents, stripped them of context, and presented them as proof of a non-existent crime wave.

You need to see the pattern here. Trump thrives on manufactured crises. He needs a constant state of emergency to keep the cameras on him and to create excuses for expanding his reach. Every minute we are talking about his so-called “Liberation Day” is a minute we are not talking about the promises he has broken, especially his promise to release the Epstein files.

This is where your attention is meant to be pulled. Away from questions that matter. Away from the victims who still have no answers. Away from the names, dates, and records that could expose the truth about some of the most powerful people in the country. Trump said he would release those files. He has not. And every headline about an imaginary D.C. crime crisis helps bury that fact a little deeper.

What happened today in Washington was not leadership. It was theater for the purpose of control. It was a calculated violation of law, an attack on local governance, and an intentional distraction from his failures and the damage his administration is doing to this country.

You have a right to real information. You have a right to demand accountability. And you have a right to remember exactly what he promised and what he has refused to deliver.
