They Won in Trump's Living Room. Democrats Flipped Mar-a-Lago's District and the Score Is 30 to Nothing.
Something extraordinary happened last night. A Democrat just won a state legislative seat in the district where Donald Trump lives. Where Mar-a-Lago sits. Where the president himself voted in this race, by mail no less, even as he spends his days attacking mail voting as fraudulent. You cannot make this stuff up.
As a trial lawyer with four decades in courtrooms across California, I have spent my career reading juries, reading people, and reading the room. And I am telling you right now, this room is shifting fast. If you care about this country, about your family, about what kind of America your kids and grandkids will grow up in, you need to pay attention to what just happened in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Signal That Came from Trump’s Own Backyard
Democrat Emily Gregory, a 40 year old small business owner, military spouse, and mother of three who had never run for office before, defeated a Trump endorsed Republican in Florida House District 87. This is the district that includes Mar-a-Lago. The Republican who held this seat before won it in 2024 by 19 points. Trump carried the district by 11 points in the presidential race. And last night, Gregory won.
She ran on the things your neighbors talk about at the grocery store. The cost of housing. The price of gas. Health care you can actually afford. She did not run as a political insider. She ran as a person who understood what families are dealing with every single day under this administration.
And she was not alone. In the Tampa area, Brian Nathan, a Navy veteran and electrical workers union leader, pulled off his own upset, winning a state Senate seat that Republicans had held comfortably. Nathan was outspent nearly seven to one. The Republican who previously held that seat won it by 10 points. Nathan won by 408 votes in a district where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats. Every single vote mattered.
The Scoreboard Tells the Whole Story
Since the 2024 presidential election, Democrats have now flipped 30 state legislative seats across the country in Republican or battleground territory. Thirty. From Arkansas to New Hampshire, from Georgia to Texas, from Iowa to Pennsylvania to Mississippi. Red districts. Purple districts. Deep red districts. All flipped.
And here is the number that should keep every Republican strategist up at night. Republicans have flipped zero Democratic seats. Not one. Zero.
This is not a fluke. This is not one lucky race in one quirky district. This is a pattern, and it is accelerating. Voters in these districts are walking into polling places and making a deliberate choice. They are choosing something different. They are rejecting the chaos.
Why This Matters for November
Let me be direct with you. This country is in trouble. The current administration is shredding norms, stoking division, wrecking our standing around the world, and making life more expensive for the very people who were promised relief. Groceries cost more. Gas costs more. Insurance costs more. And the people running this government are too busy settling personal scores and dismantling federal agencies to do anything about it.
The damage being done right now is going to take years, possibly decades, to repair. Our alliances, our economy, our institutions, the basic trust that holds a democracy together. All of it is being eroded every single day.
And I know that feels overwhelming. I know it is easy to look at the news and feel like nothing you do matters. I hear it from people all the time.
That feeling is wrong.
What happened last night in Florida, what has happened 30 times across this country since the last presidential election, is proof that your vote matters. It is proof that when people show up, the math changes. Emily Gregory was not supposed to win. Brian Nathan was not supposed to win. They won because enough people decided that showing up was more important than giving up.
The Midterms
The 2026 midterm elections are coming in November. Every seat in the U.S. House is on the ballot. Key Senate races will decide the direction of this country. State legislative seats will determine who draws your district maps, who funds your kids’ schools, who decides what your health care looks like.
This is your shot. Not next year. Not someday. This November.
If Democrats can win in Trump’s own backyard, in a district he carried by double digits, with his personal endorsement on the other candidate, then every district in America is in play. Every one.
Register to vote. Check your registration. Talk to your neighbors. Show up. What happened last night in Palm Beach is not the end of a story. It is the beginning.

Sooooooooooooo happy Ms Gregory took that seat. Let us hope it translates into Democratic Party majorities in 2026 in the Senate and House of Representatives. As an erstwhile Reublican and confused conservative, politics are not as important as decency and character.
