The Truth About Far Right and Far Left Violence
Facts Don’t Lie: Right-Wing Extremists Are Driving the Bloodshed
This week Donald Trump and J.D. Vance looked Americans straight in the eye and lied about who is really driving political violence in this country. Trump claimed,
“… radical Left political violence has hurt too many innocent people and taken too many lives.”
Vance backed him up on Monday, insisting that the statistics prove political violence is a far-left problem and promising to “crack down” on far-left groups.
Others piled on. Elon Musk tweeted,
“The Left is the party of murder.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi said:
“Left-wing radicals” killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Fox News anchor Sean Hannity declared,
“The Left has given us ten non-stop years of rage and hatred and vile language and it is undeniable that it is poisoning the minds of many people in our country.”
Not one word is even close to the truth.
Here Are The Facts
The real numbers tell a completely different story.
The ADL Center for Extremism examined 444 people killed by extremists between 2013 and 2022 and found that 75 percent of the deaths were caused by individuals on the right. ADL’s annual “Murder and Extremism” reports confirm that over the past decade roughly three quarters of extremist-related killings in the United States were committed by perpetrators linked to right-wing ideologies and that every extremist murder recorded in 2022 and 2023 was tied to right-wing actors.
A University of Maryland study conducted by its Terrorism Center looked back from 1948 to 2018 and found that right-wing extremists were more likely to carry out violence than left-wing extremists. A peer-reviewed UMD-led analysis comparing left, right, and Islamist extremists shows that left-wing actors are less likely to use lethal violence than right-wing actors.
Chris Wray, the former FBI director appointed by Trump, testified that the number one terrorist threat in the United States comes from religious and racially motivated extremists, specifically white supremacists. His testimony aligns with the Department of Homeland Security’s 2020 Homeland Threat Assessment and multiple congressional reports identifying racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists, especially white supremacists, as the most persistent and lethal domestic threat. Wray’s testimony has been repeatedly cited in oversight materials supporting the joint DHS and FBI assessment.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s analysis of the Extremist Crime Database reported that 73 percent of lethal extremist incidents in the United States since 9/11 were perpetrated by far-right actors, a finding also confirmed by the National Institute of Justice.
The January 6, 2021 Capital attack was the single biggest day of political violence in our lifetime. Right-wing extremists stormed the building in what officials call the most significant single domestic extremist incident in recent U.S. history, injuring at least 174 officers and causing multiple deaths.
Since 2018
The pattern since 2018 is unmistakable. There have been 31 targeted political killings or attempted killings carried out by 24 identified perpetrators. All but 2 of these perpetrators were connected with the far right.
Here are the attackers and what they did.
Cesar Altieri Sayoc (2018): Sent pipe bombs to nine prominent Democrats including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Maxine Waters. A registered Republican, he received a 20-year federal sentence.
Michigan Kidnapping Plot (2020): Thirteen men planned to abduct Michigan’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, over COVID-19 restrictions. All were far-right extremists.
Roy Den Hollander (2020): Murdered human-rights lawyer Marc Angelucci and then attacked the home of federal judge Esther Salas, killing her son and wounding her husband. Hollander espoused far-right, pro-Trump views.
David DePape (October 2022): Broke into Nancy Pelosi’s home, severely injuring Paul Pelosi with a hammer while searching for the Speaker. DePape followed far-right conspiracy theories and supported Trump.
Solomon Peña (December 2022): Paid gunmen to fire into the homes of New Mexico Democratic legislators after losing a state election. Peña is a registered Republican and former candidate.
Craig Robertson (August 2023): Killed by the FBI during an arrest for threats against President Joe Biden and others. Robertson was a military veteran with extreme right-wing beliefs.
Thomas Crooks (July 2024): Opened fire at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, killing one attendee and injuring three, including Trump himself. Crooks was a registered Republican.
Cody Balmer (April 2025): Tried to murder Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro by setting fire to the governor’s property. Balmer backed Trump at the time.
Vance Boelter (June 2025): A dedicated Trump supporter who murdered Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, then seriously wounded state senator John Hoffman and Hoffman’s wife.
Tyler Robinson (2025): Accused of shooting right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. Although the investigation is just beginning, Robinson came from a family that describes itself as a gun loving conservative Republican MAGA supporting Mormon family.
Note that this list does not include the January 6 insurrection where pro-Trump rioters built a gallows and chanted “Hang Mike Pence.” I shared that information earlier in the article.
These are the facts. Almost all of the politically targeted killings or attempted murders were carried out by far-right actors. None of the mentioned perpetrators belonged to or supported the Democratic Party or any established progressive organization.
He “Couldn’t Care Less”
On September 12, during an appearance on Fox & Friends, co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked Trump, “How do we fix this country? How do we come back together?”
Trump replied,
“I tell you something that’s going to get me in trouble, but I couldn’t care less.”
In his own words, the President of the United States “couldn’t care less” about bringing the country back together.
Think about that.

Here’s the truth. These men and everyone in their administration work for us. So do the politicians in Congress who keep letting this nonstop stream of lies flow.
Some of you hired them with your votes. Now you know they cannot be trusted. It is time to fire them.
None of us can sit quietly while they rewrite reality.

James Fields, a neo-Nazi and registered republican, killed one and injured 35 when he drove his car into the crowd of peaceful counter protesters. Fields' lawyers wrote that he found out about the Unite the Right rally through its organizers' online recruiting campaign.
His attorneys say he had no intent to commit a violent act, instead describing the attack as a "impulsive, angry and aggressive decision."
President Trump said afterward that there was "blame on both sides" for the violence in the college town. “You also had some very fine people on both sides,” he said.
