Let owners run their shops, hire their people, and speak their minds without a politician breathing down their necks. Government should never pick winners and losers. Government should never punish a company for its opinions.

The fourth promise was about trade. For decade after decade, Republicans championed free trade as a core conservative value. They taught a generation of voters a simple economic truth. A tariff is a tax. A tariff raises the price of goods for the family at the checkout counter. Republican presidents signed trade deals, opened markets, and warned the country about the cost of protectionism.

The fifth promise was about the Constitution itself. Republicans presented themselves as the guardians of limited government and the rule of law. They revered the separation of powers. They warned about power concentrated in a single set of hands. They told you no president sits above the courts, above Congress, or above the law. They said character matters in the Oval Office, and in the late 1990s they built an entire impeachment around the idea the conduct and honesty of a president matters to the nation.

Now Look At What They Built

Hold those promises in your mind. Small government. Personal freedom. Fiscal discipline. Free markets. Free trade. A sacred respect for the Constitution. Now look honestly at the party flying the Republican banner in 2026. Look hard at the two terms under Donald Trump. Every promise lies in pieces. Not bent. Not weakened. Gone. What stands in their place would stop the Republican voter of 1984 cold.

Government Walked Right Into Your Doctor’s Office

Start with the most personal promise of all. Government out of your private life and your body. That promise died first.

The same party now reaches into the most private medical decisions an American family will ever face. State governments run by this new Republican Party write laws telling a woman what she is allowed to do with her own pregnancy, her own body, her own health. Doctors face prison time for treating their patients. Women travel across state lines for care their home state outlawed. Lawmakers debate tracking that travel. Fertility treatments that help couples have children now sit under legal threat from the same movement.

Look at what this party dictates inside your children’s schools. It tells teachers what words they are allowed to say in a classroom. It pulls books off library shelves by the hundreds. It tells a public university what subjects to teach and what ideas count as acceptable. A movement built on the phrase get government off our backs now writes the syllabus.

A business owner today watches the federal government reward loyalty and punish dissent. The message now reads differently. Stay quiet, fall in line, or Washington makes an example of you.

The fourth betrayal hit the checkout counter. The party of free trade became the party of the largest tax increase on American families in generations, and disguised it with a friendlier word.

They call it a tariff. A tariff is a tax. American importers pay it, and they pass the cost straight to you. You pay it on groceries, on cars, on appliances, on building materials, on the everyday goods that fill your home. The Republican Party once taught this exact lesson to voters as a core conservative truth. The Republican Party now runs the opposite policy and dares you not to notice the higher prices. Federal Reserve researchers found American consumers and companies paying nearly all of the tariff cost. Independent analysts put the hit to the average household in the hundreds of dollars a year.

Here is the part that proves the point about the Constitution. In February 2026, the Supreme Court ruled six to three that the president had no legal authority to impose his sweeping global tariffs the way he did. Republicans once warned, correctly, about the danger of power concentrated in one set of hands. They were right to sound that alarm. The party carrying their name now cheers as one man gathers power on the exact scale they once feared, and calls anyone who objects a traitor.

There was a time the Republican Party told you character mattered. Honesty mattered. The conduct of a president mattered. In the late 1990s the party built a national argument on that principle and impeached a president on exactly that ground.
