Your national parks just got rewritten. Not by Congress. Not by a vote. By a memo. And the only reason you know about it is because a reporter at the New York Times got hold of the paperwork and went public.
Here is what you need to know, and here is what you can do about it today.
On January 13, 2026, Trump’s Interior Secretary Doug Burgum signed something called Secretarial Order 3447. Sounds boring. It is not. That single order told four federal agencies to expand hunting and fishing access on your public land. The agencies are the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation. The order also did something sneaky. It flipped the rules. Now, if a park manager wants to keep a local safety rule on the books, they have to justify it. If they cannot prove it absolutely belongs, it goes.
Then came April 21. Burgum sent park superintendents a follow-up memo and a spreadsheet. That spreadsheet listed exact rules at exact parks and told staff which ones to cut. The New York Times got both documents. They broke the story on May 4, 2026. The Associated Press, PBS, and the Washington Post all confirmed what is happening. The Interior Department never posted any of it for the public. You were not supposed to see this.

Follow The Money
This did not start with a hunter writing a letter to Washington. This started with an industry. The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the trade group for gun and ammo makers, and they have openly said they helped develop the new Interior policy. They are also the biggest gun lobby in the country right now. According to federal records tracked by OpenSecrets, the group spent about 6.97 million dollars on lobbying in 2024 and another 7.02 million dollars in 2025. In just the first three months of Trump’s second term, they reported 1.85 million dollars in lobbying, more than every other gun group in America put together. That is who was in the room. You were not.
Follow The Power
Doug Burgum was the gun industry’s pick from day one. The NRA publicly backed his nomination as Interior Secretary, and once he was in, the firearms trade group praised every move he made.
Then there is the Trump family. Donald Trump Jr. is a partner at an investment firm called 1789 Capital. That firm backed GrabAGun, an online gun retailer that went public on the New York Stock Exchange on July 16, 2025, under the ticker symbol PEW. Trump Jr. is on its board, owns about 300,000 shares of the stock, and rang the opening bell for it. The board also includes Chris Cox, the former chief lobbyist for the NRA. On top of that, public reporting shows that a Trump-aligned lobbying firm called Checkmate Government Relations, run by a hunting partner of Trump Jr. named Ches McDowell, counts the gun industry trade group and major gunmakers like Glock, Beretta, Taurus, and Springfield Armory as clients.
So when you ask why this is happening, the honest answer is this. The Trump family makes money when guns sell. The gun industry needs more places to hunt to recruit new buyers. Only about 4.2 percent of Americans over the age of 16 even hunted in 2024, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Census data. Fewer hunters means fewer guns, fewer bullets, fewer licenses sold. Opening up your parks is the fix.
Now the law. The National Park Service Organic Act of 1916 says the Park Service has to protect park land and wildlife and leave the parks in good shape for the people who come next. The April memo did not require any environmental study. It did not require any public meeting. It did not even mention the Organic Act. Lawsuits are coming. They should be.

Demand a real environmental review at every single park on that list before one more protection disappears.
These parks belong to you. They belong to your kids. They belong to every generation that has not even been born yet. And right now they are being changed in the dark by an industry that has a financial stake in selling more guns and a White House family that profits when they do.

I would be afraid to even visit a park that allows open hunting in public spaces. There is a safety issue here. I suppose that is part of their plan. Fewer hikers and more hunters.
