CNN, MS NOW and Politico have filed their lawsuit against the Trump administration. They say President Trump’s decision to bar them from the White House grounds violates their First Amendment right to cover the president, and I agree. They are asking the court to reverse the ban and restore their White House press passes, and they have requested an expedited hearing so a judge rules on this quickly rather than letting it sit on a docket for months while their reporters stay locked outside the gate. Why This Reaches Your Kitchen Table
Think about what a press pass does. It puts a reporter inside the building where decisions about your taxes, your healthcare, your kids’ schools, and your safety get made, and that reporter’s whole job is to walk back out and tell you what happened. You are not in that room. Neither is your neighbor. The reporter in the room is how you find out. A press pass is your seat in the room, held by someone whose only job is to tell you what happened. The First Amendment protects that arrangement because the founders understood that a government nobody watches is a government that answers to nobody. Take the reporter out and the door closes on you too.
Now picture a president who hands out those seats based on how much he likes the coverage. Reporters learn fast what happens to the ones who ask hard questions, the ones who keep their passes start softening their questions to stay in the room, and within a few news cycles you are getting a version of events shaped by who was allowed through the door. That is how it works.
The lawsuit carries the names of a few newsrooms. The person with the most at stake is you. When a president decides who gets to watch him, he decides what you get to know.

None Of This Is Normal
Presidents have always hated some of their coverage. None of them got to lock reporters out of the building for it, because the moment that becomes acceptable, every future president of every party gets the same tool and uses it against whoever is telling the story they do not want told.
