Stephen Miller: The Unelected Extremist Steering Trump’s White House Toward Authoritarianism
Stephen Miller is the most dangerous guy in Washington you never voted for – a backroom operator with a front-row seat to influence and power.
He’s not a cabinet secretary, not a lawyer, and certainly not a constitutional scholar. Yet, as Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security advisor, Stephen Miller wields unchecked power. He’s got a VIP pass to the Oval Office, no appointment, no protocol. He walks in whenever he wants and stays until everyone else is gone, making sure he’s the last voice Trump hears before a decision is made.
That’s not just influence, that’s control. And in my opinion, this unelected ideologue isn’t just advising, he’s steering the administration toward authoritarianism under the guise of patriotism, and we’re letting him do it.
A Radicalization Story
Miller’s journey from a Santa Monica upbringing to the White House is detailed in Jean Guerrero’s biography, Hatemonger: Stephen Miller, Donald Trump, and the White Nationalist Agenda. The book traces his radicalization, highlighting his associations with white nationalist Richard Spencer during his time at Duke University.
You might remember Spencer as being a key organizer of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which turned violent and resulted in the death of a counter-protester. Remember Trump saying there “were very fine people on both sides."
In a civil lawsuit, Spencer was found liable for civil conspiracy under Virginia state law and for race-based harassment or violence. The jury awarded over $25 million in damages to the plaintiffs, with Spencer personally liable for $700,000 in punitive damages.
In 2019, the Southern Poverty Law Center released emails sent by Miller that promoted white nationalist literature and websites, including VDARE and American Renaissance.
Following the release of his emails, over 80 members of Congress called for Miller's resignation, citing his promotion of white nationalist ideologies. You can and should read the emails here.
Miller’s tenure has been marked by policies that many view as extreme and inhumane. He was a chief architect of the travel ban targeting predominantly Muslim countries and the family separation policy at the U.S.-Mexico border. This led to the separation of thousands of children from their parents with children living in chain-link enclosures within warehouse-like settings. These actions have drawn widespread criticism for their ethical and legal implications.
Controversial Statements and Actions
Miller has made several statements that have sparked controversy. In a 2017 appearance on CBS' Face the Nation, he claimed that the president's powers to protect the country "will not be questioned," a statement that was criticized for undermining the judiciary's role.
In a recent 2025 press encounter, Miller indicated that the administration was considering suspending the “privilege” of the writ of habeas corpus. Fact check- It’s not a privilege; it’s a fundamental constitutional right.
Writ of habeas corpus is explicitly protected under Article I, Section 9, Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution, known as the Suspension Clause. You don’t just get to suspend a Constitutional right because you don’t like how due process works.
Every time I hear this guy talk about the law, I cringe because despite his confident and arrogant delivery, he rarely comes close to accurately interpreting or explaining the legal issue at hand. And yet, this is the guy who has Trump’s ear.
Family Members
Even members of his own family shared scathing criticism about his beliefs and actions. In a 2018 op-ed for Politico, Miller’s uncle, Dr. David S. Glosser, called his nephew an “immigration hypocrite,” pointing out that Miller’s great-grandfather fled anti-Jewish persecution in Belarus in 1903, a journey that would have been impossible under Miller’s restrictive immigration stance.
Dr. Glosser said, "If in the early 20th century the USA had built a wall against poor desperate ignorant immigrants of a different religion, like the Glossers, all of us would have gone up the crematoria chimneys with the other six million kinsmen whom we can never know."
Furthermore, Glosser expressed “dismay and increasing horror” at Miller’s involvement in policies like the family separation initiative, stating such actions “repudiate the very foundation of our family’s life in this country.” He also called Miller’s policies “morally reprehensible.”
Patti Glosser Rudick, another family member, condemned the treatment of migrant children, asking on social media, “Why aren’t people out demonstrating about children being thrown in cages?” and described the situation as “sick sick sick.”
These statements underscore the profound familial rift caused by Miller's role in shaping and defending controversial immigration policies, particularly the family separation policy.
Why Is This Guy Still Allowed In The White House?
As a lawyer and a citizen who actually believes in the rule of law, let me lay it out for you: Stephen Miller isn’t just another advisor. He’s the guy pulling the strings behind the scenes, the unelected extremist who’s been given a front-row seat to power without a single vote of confidence from you or me.
His track record? Ugly. His influence? Dangerous. And the fact that he’s still calling the shots in Trump’s White House should make every American’s blood boil.
So, wake up. Pay attention. This guy isn’t some harmless policy wonk, he’s a ticking time bomb wrapped in a suit and a smug grin. And if we don’t start calling him out for what he is – a threat to our democracy – then we’re just handing him the keys to the castle.
America, it’s long past time to step up, speak out, and shut this guy down before he does even more damage.
