No One Is Taking Your Vote

This latest outburst from Donald Trump about nationalizing elections sounds dramatic on purpose. It is meant to rattle people. It is meant to feel dangerous. It is also legally empty.

Let’s get something clear right now:

The 34 time convicted felon and civilly adjudicated sexual abuser sitting in the Oval Office does not have the authority to stop the election. Not as a president or anyone else. The Constitution does not allow it.

The United States Constitution is very clear about who runs elections. Article I gives states the primary responsibility for the time, place, and manner of holding elections. That authority sits with state legislatures and state election officials. Congress has limited power to set baseline rules, and those rules are narrow. These rules exist to protect access and fairness, not to seize control. No president gets to override this structure. No executive order can erase it. No stupid interview with a right-wing podcaster or angry speech can rewrite it.

This is not a gray area. It is settled law backed by more than two hundred years of practice, Supreme Court decisions, and bipartisan understanding.

States administer voter registration. States design ballots. States run polling places. States count votes. The federal government does not step in unless Congress passes a valid law within constitutional limits, and even then states still run the machinery. That balance exists to prevent exactly what Trump is floating. Centralized control over voting is something the founders explicitly rejected.

Trump knows this. His advisers know this. Republican leaders in Congress know this. That is why even members of his own party have publicly distanced themselves from the idea. They understand that it collides head on with state sovereignty and separation of powers. The Constitution does not treat states as agents of the president. States are co sovereigns. They do not take orders from the White House when it comes to elections.

Despite what Trump or other conspiracy theorist say, there was no widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Courts across the country rejected those claims. Republican officials rejected them. Trump appointed judges rejected them. The same is true for the 2024 election. Claims were made. Evidence was demanded. None appeared. The voting and legal system worked exactly as designed. Losing does not equal fraud. It never has in a presidential election.

So why say this now. Timing answers that question. A recent Epstein file release put Trump and Melania back into the public record in a way that is deeply uncomfortable for both of them. And frankly, it should be.

Millions of files. Over thirty 38,000 references to Trump, Melania, Mar a Lago, and others in their orbit. Emails, government records, videos. All sitting inside the latest Department of Justice release. That is not coincidence. That is a paper trail.

Instead of addressing that reality, he’s trying to change the subject like he always does. He reached for an old playbook and attacked the system. He questions legitimacy and creates noise. Fear and distraction have always been his tools of choice.

This rhetoric also serves another purpose. It is meant to discourage participation. If people believe elections are rigged or about to be taken over, some will stop voting. They won’t think it matters. And that’s the point.

That outcome benefits Trump and his allies. It also sets the stage for future complaints. When Democrats retake the House and possibly the Senate later this year, Trump wants a ready made excuse. He wants his supporters primed to reject the result before it happens.

None of this changes the law. None of this changes how elections actually work. Trump cannot nationalize voting. He cannot order states to hand over their election systems. As I posted earlier this week in my notes, he’s 0-21 in the courts trying to seize voter files. He cannot direct federal agencies to seize control of ballots. Any serious attempt would be blocked immediately in court and instantly struck down. Judges across the ideological spectrum have consistently defended state control over elections because the Constitution demands it.

That is the reassurance people need to hear. What Trump and some of his supporters are saying is noise, not power. It is bluster, not authority. It is another example of Trump saying something outrageous to pull attention away from accountability and toward chaos. The system is holding and the guardrails are real. State election officials will continue to do their jobs and votes will continue to be cast and counted according to law.

The real risk is not that Trump will succeed in taking over elections. The real risk is that people will tune out, disengage, or lose faith. That outcome would hand him exactly what he wants without him lifting a finger. Democracy weakens when people are convinced it is already broken.

This moment calls for clarity, not panic. The Constitution still matters and state rights still matter. Courts still function and elections will happen this year just as they always have. Your vote still counts. Trump’s shouting does not change that reality.

What you are seeing is a distraction layered on top of another distraction, all designed to keep your eyes off the truth. Do not give it more power than it deserves. Stay informed. Stay engaged. Show up. That is how this nonsense loses its force.
