Love, Hate, and the Dangerous Normalization of Presidential Cruelty

We Have No Leadership

What does it say about a president when he attacks an Olympic athlete for speaking honestly, and lashes out at a Super Bowl halftime moment built around one simple message: love is stronger than hate?

Pause on that.

Because leadership shows up in moments like these.

On Sunday, one of the most influential entertainers on the planet took the world’s biggest stage and centered his performance on love. Not outrage. Not division. Love. The message was simple and it reached millions.

In response, here’s what was posted by the President of the United States and shared with tens of millions around the world:

For full context, let’s take a step back and look at the facts.

Benito Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, is one of the most popular entertainers on the planet, a six-time Grammy winner, and not that it matters, but I’m going to point it out anyway, a United States citizen.

He along with other musicians and entertains gave an amazing halftime performance.

At the same time, the “other” halftime show put on by Turning Point USA and supported by Trump and MAGA was headlined by an over-the-hill middle aged guy named Kid Rock and someone who’s done a sex tape with strippers, been arrested twice for assault and battery, who doesn’t believe everyone deserves equal rights, who’s never won even a Grammy, and who wrote a song with the lyrics, “Young ladies, young ladies, I like ’em underage, see Some say that’s statutory, but I say it’s mandatory.”

It’s pretty obvious what’s going through Trump’s mind and frankly, it’s pathetic.

And there’s more.

Before this post about the Super Bowl halftime show, Trump chose to spend his energy tearing down Hunter Hess, an American Olympic athlete for calmly and respectfully expressing what many Americans feel right now. Pride in their teammates, families, and communities, while also acknowledging that they do not agree with every political decision made in their name.

When asked about all that’s going on in our country, Hunter responded during an Olympic press conference in Milan: “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the US right now. I think it’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of. Just because I wear the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the US.”

In response to hearing this, the angry old felon in the White House, probably off his meds and with a full load in his diapers, decided to chime in with this post:

Pretty sad and disgusting right?

Hunter didn’t attack the country. He didn’t insult the flag. He told the truth and simply said what many of us are thinking. Wearing the flag can mean honoring the people you love and the good you believe in, without pretending everything is perfect. Especially in today’s world.

That honesty should be respected. Not punished.

And this did not happen in isolation.

Let’s not forget that this is the same president who just shared a racist post depicting Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as apes.

Let that sink in.

This was not a mistake. It was not satire. It was a deliberate act that trafficked in one of the oldest and ugliest forms of racism in American history. Dehumanization. The kind that strips people of dignity and signals to others that cruelty is acceptable.

A president does not get a pass on this. Ever.

This Matters

This pattern matters. When leaders punch down, when they fuel division instead of solving problems, it affects all of us. It distracts from the real work. Housing. Healthcare. Education. Economic stability. Public trust.

Here’s what I believe.

The job of the president is to bring people together and focus on policies that improve life for Americans across the board. Not to inflame culture wars. Not to target athletes, artists, or anyone who speaks with integrity.

And here’s the part where you come in.

Change does not happen by scrolling past moments like this. It happens when people show up. Vote in the midterms. Encourage others to vote. Restore accountability. Restore oversight. Make sure no one gets to govern without checks and balance.

And remember this, because it matters more than ever.

The only thing more powerful than hate is love.
