Two Words on Election Night
Late Tuesday night, a few hours after the networks projected that Democrats would take back the House, Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the man who will chair the House Oversight Committee in January, posted a two-word message for Donald Trump and everyone around him who thought the law would never catch up.
“Lawyer up.”
The next morning Garcia stood in front of reporters in Huntington Beach, a city in the district he will represent in the next Congress, and he explained himself. He told them the American people have spoken loudly and clearly, and they want change. He said voters are tired of the destruction and the corruption of Donald Trump and this administration, and he called Tuesday’s results a mandate.
He is right, and you made it happen. Every one of you who mailed a ballot or stood in line to vote sent the same message to Washington.
I have been a trial lawyer in Orange County for forty years, and I have watched what happens to people who believed the rules would never reach them, the moment a process server walks up the driveway with a subpoena in hand and the confidence drains out of their face in about two seconds flat. It never gets old.
