Billions for a Name Change? Trump’s ‘Department of War’ Stunt Sends You the Bill
The Department of War name change is nothing more than a monument to one draft dodger’s ego, funded by your hard-earned tax dollars and dreamed up by a convicted felon sitting in the Oval Office, surrounded by his new gold ornaments.
America Deserves Better.
Trump is going to rebrand the Department of Defense into the Department of War. He said the change proves America is “a force to be reckoned with,” arguing that “Defense” sounds passive and even “woke,” while “War” sends a bold message of strength and victory.
My take is that the change isn’t happening to protect our troops. Not to strengthen our alliances. I’s just a cosmetic rebrand. And it’s going to cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
Every sign, seal, uniform, website, manual, and medal across 700,000 facilities in 40 countries and all 50 states will have to change. It’s bureaucracy at its most wasteful. Meanwhile, that same money could do things that actually matter. For example:
Fund veterans’ services. Nearly 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. A billion dollars could build permanent supportive housing and expand mental health programs at the VA so those who served don’t end up on the streets.
Fix crumbling schools. For the price of this rebrand, we could modernize thousands of public schools with safe drinking water, air conditioning, and updated technology. Imagine replacing lead pipes in Flint, Michigan, or repairing unsafe classrooms in Philadelphia where kids currently wear coats inside in winter.
Rebuild bridges and highways. The American Society of Civil Engineers says 43,000 bridges are in poor condition. A billion dollars could repair more than 1,000 of them, preventing tragedies like the 2022 Pittsburgh bridge collapse.
Erase Your Neighbor’s Medical Bills. Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in America. Nonprofits like RIP Medical Debt can erase $100 in bills for every $1 donated. With a billion dollars, we could wipe out $100 billion in crushing hospital and pharmacy debt, freeing millions of families from collection calls, ruined credit scores, and the impossible choice between paying for groceries or paying the ER bill.
Invest in renewable energy. A billion dollars could install solar panels on over 100,000 homes, cutting energy bills for working families while fighting climate change. It could also fund clean-energy job training programs in coal towns hit hardest by economic transition.
The truth is simple: a new name won’t make us safer, and a new logo won’t make our military stronger. This rebrand is a vanity project, nothing more.
Americans deserve leaders who put resources where they matter: in classrooms, in hospitals, in communities, and in the future we leave our kids.
So the next time you hear about this so-called “Department of War,” don’t be fooled. It’s nothing more than a monument to one draft dodger’s ego, funded by your hard-earned tax dollars and dreamed up by a convicted felon sitting in the Oval Office, surrounded by his new gold ornaments.
