An Open Letter to Donald Trump: Your Days Are Numbered

The Midterms Are Coming. And So Are We.

Donald Trump,

The clock is ticking.

Your days in unchecked power are running out and you know it. The American people are watching, learning, and organizing. The midterm elections are coming and millions of voters who have had enough of the chaos, the corruption, and the abuse of power are preparing to show up.

I have spent four decades practicing law, watching administrations come and go, studying how power works and how it breaks when left unchecked. I have seen a lot. I have never seen anything like what you have done to this country in just over a year. And here is what you have not accounted for: the American people are paying attention, and they are angry, organized, and headed straight for the ballot box in November.

Your days of unchecked power are numbered. We are coming for you in the 2026 midterms. Your majority in Congress is the only thing standing between you and real accountability. We intend to take it. We intend to take the House. We intend to take the Senate. And when we do, we are going to use subpoena power and oversight, the power of the purse, and the separation of powers the Constitution gives to Congress to put the brakes on every reckless, corrupt, and destructive thing you have done since you walked back into the Oval Office.

You Launched a War with Iran and Did Not Even Ask Congress

On February 28, 2026, you and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury, a massive joint military campaign against Iran. You announced it on Truth Social at two in the morning. You did not address the American people from the Oval Office. You did not brief Congress beyond a last minute notification to the Gang of Eight. You posted a video and told the Iranian people their hour of freedom was at hand, as if regime change were something you could gift wrap from a social media app.

In just the first twelve hours, nearly 900 strikes hit targets across Iran. The opening salvo killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with hundreds of missiles and thousands of drones, striking across at least twelve countries. More than a thousand people are dead. Hundreds of thousands of travelers are stranded. Oil markets are in chaos. The global economy just absorbed another shock it did not need.

You launched a war without congressional approval, without public debate, and against the expressed wishes of the American people. Polling showed only five percent of Democrats and seventeen percent of Republicans wanted a regime change war with Iran. You did it anyway. You did what you wanted, like you always do, and now American service members are in harm’s way because of your ego and your timeline.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to hold you accountable for dragging this country into another war in the Middle East without the legal authority to do so.

You Raised the Cost of Living for Every Family in America with Your Tariffs

You told the American people tariffs would make them richer. That was a lie. The average effective tariff rate jumped from 2.4 percent in 2024 to nearly 17 percent at its peak under your watch, the highest level since the early 1930s. Federal Reserve research found that nearly 90 percent of those costs landed on American businesses and American consumers. Families across the country are paying an average of $1,300 more per household in 2026 because of your trade policies.

The Supreme Court struck down your IEEPA tariffs in February 2026, ruling 6 to 3 that you had no legal authority to impose them. Six justices, including some you appointed, told you that you broke the law. The government now owes an estimated $166 billion in refunds to more than 330,000 businesses that paid tariffs the Court found unconstitutional. And what did you do the very next day? You slapped a new 10 percent global tariff using a different statute, then threatened to raise it to 15 percent, because losing in court has never once caused you to slow down.

Small businesses reported raising prices, delaying expansion, and preparing for layoffs. Jobs were cut. Wages stalled. You did all of this while telling people you were winning.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to use the power of the purse to stop you from waging economic war on your own citizens.

You Promised to Release the Epstein Files and Then Protected the Predators

You promised on Fox News and on the campaign trail that you would release the Epstein files. Congress delivered. The House passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act 427 to 1. The Senate approved it unanimously. You signed it into law on November 19, 2025. The statute gave the Attorney General 30 days to release all unclassified records. It said in plain English that no record could be withheld on the basis of embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity to any government official, public figure, or foreign dignitary.

Your Department of Justice missed the deadline. The first batch on December 19 was so heavily redacted that hundreds of pages were entirely blacked out. The January 30 release included over three million pages, roughly half of the six million pages the DOJ itself identified as responsive. Your Deputy Attorney General then announced there would be no additional prosecutions. Case closed.

The redactions exposed exactly who your administration chose to protect, and it was not the victims. A Wall Street Journal review found at least 43 victims’ full names published unredacted, including more than two dozen who were minors when abused. Some names appeared over 100 times. The DOJ published unredacted nude images of young women with their faces visible. Attorneys who had provided a list of 350 victim names weeks in advance said the department never ran a basic keyword search. Victims’ lawyers called it the single most egregious violation of victim privacy in one day in United States history. Draft indictments showed prosecutors believed they could have charged additional conspirators alongside Epstein. Those names stayed hidden behind black bars. And when members of Congress reviewed unredacted files at a secure DOJ facility, your department tracked their searches and generated a report on what they looked for. Members of both parties, including Republican Representative Nancy Mace, called it a form of intimidation.

Fifty six percent of Americans disapprove of your handling of the Epstein files. Only 25 percent approve. That crosses every party line because this is not partisan. The American people wanted transparency. What they got was a process that exposed survivors and shielded predators.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress, and when we do, we are going to use subpoena power to get every unredacted page, release the names of every perpetrator the law entitles the public to see, and make sure the victims of Jeffrey Epstein finally receive the justice your administration denied them.

You Turned the Presidency into a Personal Cryptocurrency ATM

Before your inauguration, you launched a meme coin called $TRUMP. Your companies and affiliates control 80 percent of the total supply. Within hours the market cap hit $27 billion. Within weeks it crashed, wiping out billions in value held mostly by your own supporters. Your family pocketed hundreds of millions of dollars in trading fees. Ethics experts have called this the single worst conflict of interest in the modern history of the American presidency.

Foreign nationals and anonymous buyers purchased your coin on exchanges not even accessible inside the United States, creating a direct pipeline for foreign money to flow to the sitting president. An Abu Dhabi investment entity tied to the UAE national security advisor bought a 49 percent stake in your World Liberty Financial venture for $500 million, sending approximately $187 million to entities controlled by your family. Shortly after, your administration approved a plan to export advanced AI chips to the UAE despite national security concerns. We connected the dots. It’s clear what’s going on.

You hosted a dinner at your golf club for the top 220 holders of your meme coin. You are setting cryptocurrency policy while your family profits directly from cryptocurrency markets. A congressional investigation found that your crypto ventures are entangled with foreign governments, corporate allies, and individuals with criminal records.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to launch full investigations into every dollar, every deal, and every foreign entanglement tied to your crypto empire.

You Sent Masked Federal Agents into American Cities

You deployed masked ICE officers and federal agents into Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and other cities across the country. They used tear gas on residential streets. They tackled people in parking lots. They pointed guns at bystanders who were filming. They operated without visible identification, looking more like an occupying military force than a law enforcement operation.

You sent the National Guard into Los Angeles. You sent thousands of federal officers into the Minneapolis area. You did not do this to protect communities. You did this to send a message. You did this to intimidate. You did this because you see American cities that did not vote for you as enemy territory.

This is not how democracy works. Law enforcement serves the community. It does not terrorize it. When federal agents operate in masks without badges, they strip away every layer of accountability that protects the public from abuse.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to use oversight authority to investigate every deployment, every use of force order, and every decision to send militarized federal agents against American residents.

You Pardoned the People Who Attacked the Capitol

On your first day back in office, January 20, 2025, you granted blanket clemency to nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol. You pardoned people convicted of assaulting police officers. You pardoned members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers convicted of seditious conspiracy. You released people who beat officers with flagpoles, sprayed them with bear spray, and smashed through windows with stolen riot shields.

More than 600 of those defendants had been convicted of assaulting or obstructing law enforcement. More than 170 were convicted of using a deadly weapon. Multiple pardoned individuals had criminal histories including rape, domestic violence, child sexual exploitation, and drug trafficking. At least 33 pardoned rioters have been rearrested or charged with new crimes since receiving their pardons. One of them, just seven months after you freed him, was sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing children.

You did not review these cases individually. You did not consult with the officers who were beaten. You did not weigh the facts. You said, and this has been reported, that at the last minute you decided to release them all. Judges appointed by both parties called it an abuse of power. The officers who defended the Capitol that day called it a betrayal.

You Purged the Watchdogs

On a Friday night in January 2025, you fired at least 17 inspectors general across federal agencies. You did it by email. The stated reason was “changing priorities.” You gave no notice to Congress. Federal law requires 30 days notice and a substantive rationale before removing an inspector general. You provided neither. Even Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said you violated the law.

Inspectors general exist for one reason: to root out waste, fraud, and abuse inside the government. They are nonpartisan. They serve across administrations. Several of the inspectors general you fired were people you appointed during your first term. Some were actively investigating matters tied to your allies, including reviews of Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Neuralink. A federal judge later ruled that the firings were unlawful.

You did not fire these watchdogs because they failed at their jobs. You fired them because they were doing their jobs, and that made them inconvenient.

You Are Building a Loyalty Based Government

In February 2026, the Office of Personnel Management finalized a rule creating a new employment category called Schedule Policy/Career. This rule strips civil service protections from up to 50,000 federal employees, making them effectively at will workers who can be fired without meaningful due process or appeal. The regulation received more than 40,000 public comments, with 94 percent opposed. You finalized it anyway.

This is not about accountability. This is about loyalty. Your administration has said out loud that the purpose is to remove workers who engage in “resistance to policy.” The rule strips employees of their right to appeal to an independent board. It eliminates the whistleblower protections that have historically safeguarded people who report wrongdoing. It takes the professional, merit based civil service that has served this country for nearly 150 years and turns it into a patronage system where the only qualification that matters is whether you support the president.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to pass legislation that permanently protects the civil service from political manipulation.

You Gutted Environmental Protections

You pulled the United States out of the Paris climate agreement again. You proposed repealing limits on carbon, mercury, and other pollutants from power plants. You weakened air toxics rules. Your administration oversaw a historic low in federal environmental enforcement actions in 2025. You moved to revoke the legal basis for major federal climate regulation entirely.

You are not just rolling back rules. You are dismantling the legal framework that allows the government to protect clean air and clean water for your children and mine. You are doing this while the evidence for climate disruption grows stronger every single year, while communities across the country face flooding, wildfire, extreme heat, and contaminated drinking water.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to restore environmental protections that keep families safe and hold polluters accountable.

You Destroyed America’s Reputation and Turned Our Allies into Enemies

There was a time, not long ago, when the word of the United States meant something. When allies trusted us. When treaties carried weight. When the global order rested on the understanding that America stood for the rule of law, collective security, and the principle that nations do not seize territory from their friends at gunpoint. You have torched every bit of that in barely a year.

You bombed Venezuela, captured its president in a predawn military raid, flew him blindfolded to New York on an aircraft carrier, and then held a press conference at Mar a Lago where you announced the United States would “run” Venezuela. You did this without congressional authorization. You described the raid as one of the most stunning displays of military might in American history. Seventy percent of American voters opposed military action in Venezuela. You ignored them. The UN Secretary General said you set a dangerous precedent. Georgetown foreign policy experts warned that your actions handed Russia and China the exact argument they needed to justify their own territorial aggression, that the West applies rules selectively and that power is all that matters.

Then, days later, you turned your sights on Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, one of the twelve founding members of NATO and a country whose soldiers fought and died alongside ours in Afghanistan after September 11. You threatened Denmark with 25 percent tariffs unless it handed over Greenland. Your senior adviser Stephen Miller said nobody would fight the United States militarily over the island. His wife posted a map of Greenland draped in the American flag with the word “SOON.” You told a foreign prime minister in writing that you no longer felt an obligation to think purely of peace because you did not win the Nobel Prize. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a U.S. attack on a NATO ally would be the end of everything, including NATO itself. Three quarters of Americans opposed the idea. You kept pushing. Leaders across Europe, including France, Germany, Finland, Norway, and the United Kingdom, lined up to condemn you.

You threatened Canada, one of our closest allies and largest trading partners, with tariffs and rhetoric so aggressive that relations between the two countries hit their lowest point in modern memory. You threatened Colombia. You threatened Mexico with military operations on its soil. You killed more than 115 people in Caribbean boat strikes that your own intelligence agencies could not publicly link to drug trafficking or to Venezuela’s government.

And while you bullied every democratic ally within reach, you praised authoritarian leaders. You courted dictators and strongmen while treating the leaders of free nations with open contempt. The message the world received was unmistakable: the United States under your leadership respects force and despises friendship. Our word is worthless. Our treaties are suggestions. Our alliances are leverage to be exploited, not commitments to be honored.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress, and when we do, we are going to reassert congressional authority over war powers, rebuild the alliances you destroyed, and make it clear to the world that the American people do not support a foreign policy built on threats, theft, and the ego of one man.

You Govern Through Punishment

A Reuters investigation documented at least 470 targets of your retribution campaign, including federal employees, prosecutors, universities, law firms, and media outlets. You fired at least 128 federal workers and officials who investigated, challenged, or otherwise stood in the way of your agenda. You went after two dozen law firms for representing clients in cases against you, restricting their access to federal buildings and cutting off government contracts. Multiple judges found these executive orders unconstitutional.

You fired FBI agents for kneeling at a Black Lives Matter protest. You stripped security clearances from people who appeared on an enemies list published by your FBI Director. You launched an interagency working group to hunt for a “deep state,” drawing officials from the intelligence community, the IRS, and the FCC. Hundreds of former national security officials urged Congress to investigate.

Governing through punishment does not make you strong. It makes you afraid. Leaders who are confident in their ideas do not need to destroy everyone who disagrees with them.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to investigate every act of political retaliation carried out by your administration.

You Hollowed Out the Institutions That Protect Us

You hollowed out the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. More than 75 percent of its attorneys have left since January 2025. Former employees, more than 200 of them signing their names publicly, accused your administration of a coordinated effort to drive out career staff and abandon the division’s historic mission of protecting voting rights, fighting housing discrimination, and enforcing equal protection under the law. The division, which once employed roughly 600 people, has replaced only a handful of those positions. Political appointees with no relevant experience are now handling cases that career prosecutors spent years building.

At the FBI and the broader Justice Department, mass firings and reassignments thinned national security ranks at the exact moment when the Iran war raised threat levels across the region and the world. You weakened the institutions designed to keep Americans safe, then started a war that made safety harder to guarantee.

We have had enough. We are showing up in record numbers to take back Congress and to demand that the institutions responsible for civil rights, national security, and equal justice are rebuilt and properly staffed.

Our Elections Do Not Stop for War, Panic, or Presidential Ego

I keep seeing the same worry surface in conversations, comments, and late night messages from people who care deeply about this country, about their kids and their grandkids. The worry always sounds the same: what happens if a president declares war or announces an emergency and decides elections no longer fit the plan?

That fear feels heavy because history matters and because trust has been strained. The answer remains grounded, stable, and far less dramatic than social media makes it seem.

Congress sets the date for federal elections by law, and that decision has stood firm since 1845 when lawmakers fixed Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. That calendar has never been paused, skipped, or rewritten. Elections moved forward during the Civil War while American soldiers fought and died on American soil. Elections moved forward during World War I as the nation mobilized overseas. Elections moved forward during World War II while families rationed food and watched loved ones ship out to Europe and the Pacific. Elections moved forward during Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq, and every major conflict that followed. Democracy kept breathing even when the country struggled to catch its breath.

The Constitution locks in terms of office. Federal law locks in the election date. A president does not write those rules. A press conference does not rewrite those rules. A declaration or executive order does not rewrite those rules. Changing the election date would require Congress to pass a new law or the nation to amend the Constitution, processes that demand broad agreement across branches of government and across states. A single person in the Oval Office does not possess the authority to override that structure with an executive order or any other unilateral action. This includes invoking the Insurrection Act.

States also play a central role. Governors, secretaries of state, county clerks, and local election officials run the actual machinery of voting. Ballots get printed locally. Polling places open locally. Votes get counted locally. Any attempt to interfere would face resistance at every level, followed by immediate court challenges, injunctions, and public accountability. Power in the American system spreads outward by design, making unilateral control extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible.

The Bottom Line

Here it is, plain and direct.

We are going to own the midterms. We are going to take back the House. We are going to take back the Senate. And when we do, every member of your administration who enabled your conduct, who looked the other way, who signed the orders, who carried out the firings, who deployed the agents, who cashed the checks, every single one of them is going to face oversight, investigation, and accountability.

We are going to use subpoena power to get answers. We are going to use the power of the purse to defund your illegal operations. We are going to enforce the separation of powers that the Constitution established precisely for moments like this.

You started a war without asking the people’s representatives. You enriched your family from the Oval Office. You pardoned violent criminals who attacked the seat of government. You fired the watchdogs. You punished anyone who told the truth. You hollowed out the agencies that protect civil rights, national security, and the rule of law.

You will be a lame duck president in your last two years in office. The country and the world will be better because of it.

This is not a threat. This is a promise backed by the ballot box, the Constitution, and tens of millions of Americans who have seen enough and are ready to act.

We’re registering to vote. We’re organizing our communities, We’re talking to our neighbors. We’ll be driving friends and family to the polls. The midterms are coming, and so are we.
