What 1776 Meant
In 1776 thirteen colonies declared independence from Great Britain. They were not wealthy nations or mighty armies. They were farmers, shopkeepers, writers, and tradespeople who had grown tired of a distant king claiming the right to tax, regulate, and punish without their consent.

Delegates met in Philadelphia and adopted the Declaration of Independence. They wrote in plain language that government exists to secure the rights of the people and that power comes only from the consent of the governed. They listed their grievances for the world to see. They declared that a ruler who acts as a tyrant forfeits his authority. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to defend that truth.
The decision was dangerous and irreversible. Britain commanded the most powerful military on earth. The colonists risked death for treason. They fought anyway. Their courage built the foundation of a democracy where leaders answer to the people and no one stands above the law.
The America of 2025
Today we live under a president who treats public office as a personal weapon. Donald Trump is back in the White House as a 34-count convicted felon and a civilly adjudicated sexual abuser, and he’s spending his second term tearing through every constitutional guardrail he can reach.
He installs loyalists in key agencies who threaten journalists and hint at investigations when media outlets refuse to fall in line. He pressures regulators to punish opponents and rewards allies with government contracts. He signs executive orders that stretch the meaning of law until it bends to his will. He praises foreign strongmen and undermines alliances that protect American security. He directs public funds toward projects that glorify himself while cutting programs that serve ordinary families. He mocks the courts, ignores congressional oversight, and attacks judges who rule against him. He floods the real and digital public squares with lies that make truth itself feel unstable.
This is not politics as usual. This is an assault on the separation of powers that keeps a president from becoming a king. It is a deliberate effort to weaken Congress so that one person can decide how money is spent and how laws are enforced. It is a campaign to intimidate critics, silence the press, and replace independent institutions with personal loyalists.
These actions erode the very structure that protects your liberty and your livelihood. They threaten your ability to speak freely, vote freely, and live under laws made by representatives you choose.
Echoes of the Past
The grievances of 1776 were clear. Colonists demanded representation in decisions that affected their lives. They opposed taxes imposed without consent. They rejected soldiers quartered in their homes and courts manipulated by royal decree. They fought a ruler who believed he could rule by personal will. The details differ across centuries, yet the spirit of the struggle is the same.
Today we face a president who claims unchecked authority, spends public money as if it were his own, and treats Congress as an obstacle to be bypassed. He punishes critics and rewards followers. He seeks to control the flow of information so that only his version of reality reaches the public. These are the very abuses that drove the colonies to break from Britain.
The New Declaration
The 2026 midterm elections are our modern declaration of independence. We do not fight with muskets and cannons. We fight with ballots, organizing, and relentless participation. Every vote is a statement that the people, not a single man, hold the ultimate power.

As we’re seeing, a president who faces no oversight can direct resources away from communities in need and toward private interests. He can rewrite regulations to benefit his friends and punish his critics. He can weaken protections that keep your air clean and your food safe. He can erode alliances that keep your family secure in a dangerous world.
Your Role
The founders of 1776 did not wait for someone else to step in. They organized meetings, printed pamphlets, and risked everything to build a new nation. They understood that freedom survives only when ordinary people take responsibility for it. The same duty belongs to you now.
Register to vote if you have not done so. Check your registration if you have. Help your neighbors do the same. Volunteer for campaigns that share your commitment to constitutional government. Talk to friends and family about what is at stake. Drive people to the polls. Knock on doors. Share information about voting deadlines and requirements. Every action counts because every vote is a declaration that the people will govern themselves.
